1951 -52 The following
editorial by Tom Williams, then owner and editor of the Jackson Herald was
printed in the July 19, 1951 edition of the Jackson Herald. We extend a
hearty welcome to the organization of a Lions Club in Jefferson. With an enrollment of 23 active local men
the club should make notable accomplishments for the community. The work of the
Lions club in the United States and of the International organization in 25
other countries is well known. Six
objectives of these clubs tell the story of what they are actually
accomplishing in the world. -To create and foster a spirit of generous consideration among
the peoples of the world through study of the problems of international
relationship. -To promote the theory and practice of the principles of good
government and good citizenship. -To take an active interest in the civic, commercial, social and
moral welfare of the community. -To unite the members in bonds of friendship, good fellowship and
mutual understanding. -To provide a forum for the full and free discussion of all
matters of public interest, partisan politics and sectarian religion alone excepted. -To encourage efficiency and promote high ethical standards in
business and professions; provided that no club shall hold out as one of its
objectives, financial benefits to its members. The greatest field of Lions
endeavor is in connection with health and welfare and boys and girls. In no less than 44,696 instances, Lions
Clubs last year carried out projects making their communities more
attractive, more active commercially, better known and better places in which
to live. In this area we have seen the
successful promotion of Lions Clubs in Commerce, Winder, Athens and
Gainesville. With the addition of a
new club in Jefferson the circuit is complete. We will look forward to the activities and
community service of this group. On July 2, 1951 the first meeting of
the Jefferson Lions Club was held in the Community Club House. Future meeting dates were to be held on the
first and third Monday nights of each month at the Community Club House. Officers and directors for the new
club were elected at their second meeting held on July 16. To serve on the board of directors were
Lions: Jack Davidson, Bob Seymour, G.T. Kesler,
